WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first prescription drug to treat erectile dysfunction, the first time the drug is available at a generic version of the drug.
The new drug, Levitra, is an FDA-approved drug that works to increase blood flow to the penis, a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Levitra is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets and is expected to be available for about $2.65 billion this year, according to the FDA.
In addition, the drug is available for about $3.05 billion, or 25 percent of the U. S. sales of Viagra, a similar drug that was approved by the FDA last year.
“This is the first time that an FDA-approved drug will be available at a generic version of a drug that is similar to the brand-name drug,” said Dr. Michael J. Dozier, the chairman and chief executive of Lilly’s division of medical devices.
The FDA has not approved a generic version of Levitra since the drug’s approval by the U. Food and Drug Administration last year. Other drugs and products that the FDA has approved to treat erectile dysfunction are in development for Vardenafil, a drug that is currently under clinical trials for treating high blood pressure.
Levitra is also approved for other uses such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is an enlarged prostate, and as an erectile dysfunction treatment in men, the Food and Drug Administration said.
“This approval is not only a significant milestone for Levitra but is also a milestone in the ongoing battle against erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Andrew W. Schumacher, the director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.
The approval follows a letter from the FDA in April on a request for a generic version of the drug from Eli Lilly, which the agency said had already been rejected by the U. Food and Drug Administration.
Levitra has also been approved for other uses, such as to treat certain types of high blood pressure, including treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition in which blood pressure levels are high enough to lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Levitra was first approved by the FDA in 2003 under the brand name Vardenafil and later approved for a more specific use, known as “off-label” uses, of Levitra, according to the FDA.
Levitra is also being studied in a Phase III clinical study for erectile dysfunction, which is expected to begin in late 2009.
“Levitra has been a game-changer for patients who struggle to get and keep an erection,” said Dr. Mark D. Smith, the chief of urology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who also has a Phase III study in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
